The farmers are at a risk of running out of business as the EU plans to reform agricultural subsidies. Currently the European Commission is working on certain new agricultural policies and subsidies, which is known as CAP(common agricultural Policy) it will commence from 2014.

Approximately 200,000 farmers in Britain receive almost 3billion Pounds ($4.9 billion) annually from EU as subsidies; the farmers receive the subsidies in form of direct payment depending upon how much land they own.

The EC proposals will make the system even more complex and bureaucratic as suggested by EFRA(Environment, food and Rural Affairs); making the condition of farm subsidies in Britain even more pathetic.

However CAP will support British farm businesses by continuing subsidies at least till 2020 and would help government to reduce reliance on Subsidies.

The European Parliament wants to reduce Europe's fastest growing type of waste – discarded mobile phones, computers and other electronic devices. EU lawmakers said that they wanted member states to collect at least 85 percent of discarded electronics by 2016, as compared to the 26 percent of EU waste collected today.

Electronics producers will be expected to foot the bill for collecting discarded appliances according to the new proposed EU rules.

In 2005 there was more than 8 million metric tons of electronic EU waste, approximately 20 kilos of EU waste per citizen. This total amount of EU waste is expected to grow to 12.3 million metric tons by 2020.

The EU is worried that improper disposal of these electronics could cause health problems and harm the environment.

After months of resisting assistance, the Portuguese caretaker government has finally admitted that it is in need of EU funding. This admission, albeit abrupt, has been welcomed by the European Commission as a responsible move. Portugal is now the third euro-zone country, after Ireland and Greece to seek European funding.

Portugal's Prime Minister, Jose Socrates, in a statement on television said that seeking EU funding was the last resort for the country. No one is sure as to what amount of European funding Portugal will ask for. EU sources estimate that a full bailout would amount to around €80 billion.

Local banks in Portugal asked the government to seek short term emergency EU funding to soothe market conditions, especially since the elections are due soon.
